EWS is BMW's 'brand' for their immobilizer systems. E39's have version 3.3. There is an "EWS Module" that is the brains of the system, however it talks to other parts of the car as well. Those are basically the opposite ends of the evap system, but if there is s leak somewhere in between, then a smoke test would probably be the best way to find it. Valve cover gaskets and valve covers are one of the most common issues on all E46 models. You identify this problem by seeing oil dripping from the valve cover and smelling burning oil. Replace them as soon as you notice the first signs of trouble! Another issue with older vehicles, in general, are the worn bushings.

Another problem i have noticed with BMW's in general is that they are not wheel balance. Have a e90 335i used, have an e46 320d Wagon bought new, an LCI F25 new and now the LCI F80 new and non of the are, weren't and aim sure will not be balanced at around 80mph

The E46 M3 chassis is significantly wider than the E36’s, so the length of the arms and the suspension’s geometry isn’t the same. Because of that, the various bushings, dampers, springs, and arms aren’t generally interchangeable between the two chassis. A common swap for E36 drift cars is a set of the E46 M3’s front control arms.
